Mental Health Professionals in Illinois observe the effects of sports gambling

Jose Tapia, a resident of Woodstock, felt Tom Brady would look for a familiar receiver as the quarterback led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers into the Super Bowl.

Before the game, Tapia opened the application on the phone and wagered $100 on Tampa Bay, receiving two or more touchdowns. This series in the sportsbook had 20-to-1 odds. The bet made Tapia $200 richer.

However, Tapia’s good luck didn’t stay for long. Recently, Tapia missed out on winning about $4350 on a $100 wager. This is because Nikola Jokic came up with one assist, calling it the triple-double stat line.

Coming Friday, betting on players through sportsbooks online will be legal and live in the state of Illinois for around a year. However, there have been claims of mental problems due to sports betting and gambling.

Faye Freeman-Smith, a board of directors member for the Illinois Council, says that 2% to 3% of those who bet will face difficulty. There is a necessity to educate and make awareness of mental health problems related to gambling and some programs that Illinois is having treatments for casino gambling.

Only a relatively less number of bettors make their habits cause their downfall. According to a few mental health professionals in Illinois, these trends would change to indicate the legalization of sports betting that will result in mental issues.

More and more people have been now inquiring about help regarding betting health issues in 2020-21.

The Casino Voluntary Self-Exclusion System was started by the Illinois Gaming Board across the state in 2002.

However, there has been an uptick in interest from casinos in removing themselves from the state’s self-exemption list in recent months. Some of the reasons are the Covid-19 shutdown, public places, and cultural events.

Since sports betting is legally getting back into business, past gamblers facing problems with wagering may want to try their hands again at sports betting.

Online sportsbook running apps will now be displaying pop-up messages “reality check,” informing bettors on how long they have been using the apps.
